How can I tell if my cat is having an allergic reaction?

Cats react to allergens in much the same way as humans do. Common symptoms include a cat’s sneezing, itching, runny nose, watering eyes, and swelling. Cats can be allergic to food, pollen, dust mites, fleas, and a number of other triggers. Cabinet Veterinaire International is progressively equipped to test your cat for specific allergies, and to offer treatment for your cat’s allergy complications. Visit our Seasonal Concerns page for more information.

What cat symptoms does Lyme Disease cause?

Lyme Disease symptoms can vary from cat to cat, but some general ones include joint pain, fatigue, and loss of appetite. This bacterial infection is transmitted by infected ticks. Examine your cat frequently, and remove any ticks. Prevent infection by using a tick preventative and asking Cabinet Veterinaire International to vaccinate your cat against Lyme Disease. If you suspect Lyme Disease, Cabinet Veterinaire International can test for it in their in-house laboratory. When winters are relatively warm, as is often the case in Switzerland, ticks survive longer, increasing the number of infections.

What causes diarrhea in cats?

When delving into the cause of your cat’s diarrhea, a veterinarian will tell you that diarrhea is not a cat illness in itself, but rather a symptom of other cat health problems. Viruses, bacteria, parasites, or a bad diet can all result in feline diarrhea. Ask yourself the following questions, and if the answer to any of them is yes, then call Cabinet Veterinaire International to schedule a consultation.

  • Might your cat have consumed a toxic substance (chemical, plant, medication)?
  • Has your cat refused food?
  • Is your cat refusing to drink?
  • Has your cat also vomited?
  • Is the cat lethargic?
  • Is your cat more than 8 years old?
  • Does the cat have a fever?
  • Is your cat dehydrated (dry mouth)?
  • Does your cat display discomfort when you palpate his abdomen?
  • Has your cat’s diarrhea symptoms persisted for more than 2 days?
  • Is your cat suffering from any already-diagnosed medical problem?
  • Does your cat have fever?

What causes vomiting in cats?

A cat’s vomiting is not an ailment in itself, but rather a symptom of other cat health problems. Call Cabinet Veterinaire International if the answer to any of these questions is yes.

  • Might your cat have consumed a toxic substance (chemical, plant, medication)?
  • Has the cat been vomiting for more than 48 hours?
  • Is the vomiting persistent?
  • Is your cat lethargic?
  • Has your cat’s appetite decreased?
  • Is your cat refusing to drink?
  • Does the cat show signs of dehydration (dry mouth)?
  • Is your cat’s abdomen sensitive?
  • Is your cat’s vomiting accompanied by diarrhea?
  • Does your cat have a fever?

Why is my cat dragging his rear on the carpet (scooting)?

Scooting can be a symptom of a cat’s parasitic infestation, perianal tumor, diarrhea, or problem anal glands. When cats’ anal glands don’t drain on their own, they can become infected, impacted, or swollen, and cause great discomfort for your cat. Schedule an appointment so that the cause can be determined and remedied, before other complications ensue.

Who should I contact for emergency veterinary hospital services?

If your cat requires immediate medical attention, call Cabinet Veterinaire International’s emergency phone line and leave a message. Providing that your phone number is not blocked, and your line is open, the pet doctor or a staff member will return your call as quickly as possible. Please only use this number for emergencies. Issues like cat spaying and neutering, vaccinations, routine appointment scheduling, rescheduling of an appointment, locating of cat kennels, or grooming concerns are not considered emergency situations. Call during regular business hours to schedule an appointment for non-emergency issues, or to ask general cat health questions. It’s also important to note that Cabinet Veterinaire International VIP Members have, among other things, access to online appointment scheduling.
